What is Botulinum toxin?
Botulinum neurotoxin is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and is commonly used as a part of anti- aging procedure to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing the underlying muscles.
How does botulinum toxin/Botox® work?
It is a neuro toxin which temporarily paralyzes the muscles which are responsible for wrinkles by blocking the neurotransmitter release at the nerve terminals. It is commonly used to treat:
Crow’s feet
Forehead lines
frown lines or eleven lines
bunny lines
neck bands
Pebble chin
What can I expect during the treatment?
For the procedure your doctor will first apply a numbing cream and wait for approx. 30 to 45 minutes. They will then mark the target muscles and inject Botox® with fine needles into those muscles. This process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
Is there any downtime after the treatment?
There is minimal downtime after the treatment, but you will need to wait for a period of approx. seven to 10 days for the results to show.
How long do the results last?
The effect of these injections usually lasts for about 3 to six months after which it gradually wears off and wrinkles start to reappear. You will need follow-up treatment for maintaining these results.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Side effects include bruising and redness at the injection site. Few patients might experience headaches or temporary drooping of eyelids. You need to discuss all the potential risks with your surgeon during your consultation.
Can Botox be used for any other indication apart from wrinkles?
Yes, Botox is widely used as a part of scar management.
